Tips for the Best Rafting Sarapiquí River Experience

Want to make the most of your rafting adventure? Dressing right and packing a few essentials can make the day more comfortable and enjoyable.

Take a look at these simple tips to help you get ready:

  • Wear quick-dry clothes: Lightweight fabrics are best since you’ll get wet on the rapids.
  • Secure water shoes: Skip the flip-flops! Choose shoes that stay on and give you a good grip.
  • Pack sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, the sun can be strong on the river.
  • Bring a change of clothes: Having something dry and comfortable for afterward makes the trip back much more pleasant.
  • Toss in a towel: Perfect for drying off after the rafting ends.
  • Best season to visit: Rafting is available year-round. For calmer waters, plan your visit between December and April. If you’re looking for a stronger current and a more intense ride, consider the rainy season from May to November.

Rafting Sarapiquí River FAQs

The Sarapiquí River offers Class III-IV rapids, which makes it ideal for travelers looking for a mix of fun and challenge. It’s exciting enough for adventure seekers but still suitable for beginners as long as you’re comfortable in the water.

Both rivers are great, but they offer different experiences. The Sarapiquí River has stronger currents and bigger drops, perfect if you want more action. The Balsa River, on the other hand, is calmer with Class II-III rapids, making it better for families with younger kids or first-time rafters.

The full experience takes about 5.3 hours from start to finish, including transportation, safety instructions, rafting time, a tropical fruit break, and lunch. Expect around 2.5 hours on the water itself.

Rafting tours run rain or shine since getting wet is part of the fun. If conditions become unsafe due to extreme weather, the tour may be rescheduled or refunded.

We don’t recommend bringing your own camera on the raft, as it can easily get damaged or lost in the rapids. Don’t worry, though—a professional photographer will be there to capture your best moments along the way.
