The range of their plumage colours seems to be infinite, and their beauty makes up for their tiny size. We’re talking about hummingbirds, the smallest birds in the world.

It’s a treat for the eyes to be able to see these winged beauties in their natural habitat. Inhabitants of the American continent can feel very proud to live alongside hummingbirds, as they can only be found in this part of the world.

  • Another special characteristic of these natural beauties is that they can fly backwards. There are no other birds that can do this, as hummingbirds are the only bird species that can fly in all directions: up, down, forwards, and of course, backwards.

There are around 343 hummingbird species worldwide.

  • The migration patterns of hummingbirds are extensive. For instance, the ruby-throated hummingbird flies 804 kilometers for 18 to 24 hours straight while crossing the Gulf of Mexico.

  • They eat from five to eight times per day, and they consume approximately half of their body weight in nourishment daily.

  • The brains of hummingbirds are the biggest among all bird species in relation to the size of their body.
